Speech  by Ambassador Md. Noor Rahman Sheikh on the occasion of Iftar Reception on  21 March, 2024

Excellency Dr Abdallah bou Habib Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants of the Republic of Lebanon and Guest of honor
Ambassadors, distinguished guests, Lebanese friends
Once again a heartily welcome to you all here for this Iftar reception
On behalf of the Embassy of India and its team, I extend our best and warmest wishes to all of you present today . Ramadan Mubarak!
We have gathered here to share blessings and celebrate the close ties between Lebanon & India.

Excellencies, Ladies & Gentlemen,

India and Lebanon have historically enjoyed close and friendly relations. As many of you would be aware, India established diplomatic relations with Lebanon in 1954. Despite some periods of difficulty in Lebanon, the Embassy was never closed down. There are about 3000 Indian nationals in Lebanon working in various companies, construction sector, agricultural farms, etc and contributing to the growth and progress of Lebanon.

Excellencies, Ladies & Gentlemen,

We are working closely with the Lebanese side in broadening and deepening our engagement on all bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest, and in expanding our cooperation in various sectors for greater progress and prosperity of the people of our two countries.

Excellencies, Ladies & Gentlemen,

Indian Army Battalion comprising of about 900 personnel has been deployed in UNIFIL for the last 25 years. It is indicative of India’s strong support for peace and stability in South Lebanon and the region. Despite the turbulent and unstable situation in South Lebanon, Indian Battalion remains committed in restoring peace and security.

Excellencies, Ladies & Gentlemen,

Once again, I thank you all for accepting our invitation and joining us in our   Iftar reception, hoping that gatherings like these continue.
So at this meaningful occasion of Iftar reception, let us hope for the end of sufferings and for the joy of a lasting peace in Lebanon, the Middle East and the world.

I wish you a peaceful Ramadan. Ramadan Mubarak!
