Speech by H.E. Md. Noor Rahman Sheikh, Ambassador of India to Lebanon
on the occasion of the 11th International Day of Yoga
20 June 2025, Beirut, Lebanon
Your Excellency Dr. Nora Bayrakdarian, Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports,
Excellencies- Members of Parliament & Ambassadors, members of Diplomatic Corps, distinguished guests and Friends of India,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Namaste and Good Evening to everyone present here.
It is my great pleasure to welcome you here today as we gather to celebrate the 11th International Day of Yoga. I would especially like to thank Her Excellency Dr. Nora Bayrakdarian, our Guest of Honour, for joining us on this meaningful occasion.
Yoga is one of India’s most precious gifts to the world — a practice that promotes not only physical health but also mental well-being and inner peace. It is deeply rooted in our culture and philosophy, and today, it has become a global movement, embraced by millions of people across continents.
For me, Yoga has been very close to my heart as I have been practicing Yoga for the last 33 years.
On the occasion of the 11th International Day of Yoga, the Embassy has organized several Yoga Events in various parts of Lebanon- Cedar Biosphere Ain Zhalta-Chouf; UNIFIL Headquarters, Naqoura; Mediterranean Beach, Byblos. About 2000 persons have attended in these events. Tomorrow, an event is also scheduled at Ain Sadde BL Herbert Camp.
Here in Lebanon, I am heartened to see how warmly yoga has been received. There are now more than 30 yoga centres across the country, and year after year, we witness strong and joyful participation from Lebanese citizens — young and old, professionals and students, and even members of the political and diplomatic community. This is a powerful message — a message of hope, resilience, and unity.
When we talk about yoga, we are not just speaking of physical exercise. We are speaking of a path — a way of life — that brings calm amidst chaos, and clarity amidst uncertainty. In today’s challenging world, we need such tools more than ever. Yoga helps us connect with ourselves and with each other, beyond boundaries of nationality or language.
As I often say, the activities we organize at the Indian Embassy — whether cultural events, community initiatives, or yoga sessions like this one — are aimed at spreading joy, optimism, and a shared sense of humanity. In the current regional context, where tensions and difficulties persist, it is all the more important to create spaces for peace and well-being.
I would also like to reiterate my deep admiration for the people of Lebanon. I have always found the Lebanese to be intelligent, creative and hardworking. You have an incredible spirit and you deserve the peace and stability needed to fully realize your potential.
Let me also share something of interest to you all: The Indian Embassy in Lebanon was opened in 1954 — and not once have we closed since then, even during the most difficult of times. We remain committed to standing with the Lebanese people — always, under all circumstances.
Today’s celebration of 11th International Day of Yoga is also about friendship, perseverance, and shared values. It is a reminder that life continues, even amid hardship, and that we must always remain patient and optimistic for brighter days.
In conclusion, let me say this: India stands for peace — in Lebanon, in the region, and around the world. On this 11th International Day of Yoga, let us come together in that spirit — to breathe, to reflect, and to renew our commitment to harmony within and around us.
Thank you.
Jai Hind!
